Boda bodas, the ubiquitous motorbike taxis of East Africa, are not just a mode of transportation but a lifeline for many in bustling cities like Nairobi, Kampala, and Dar es Salaam. Now, this vital industry is on the verge of transformation with the integration of blockchain technology for real-time tracking, funded by Watu, an asset financing company.

In a ground-breaking move reported by Cointelegraph, Watu has partnered up with Nodle, leveraging the latter’s blockchain-powered decentralized physical infrastructure network (DePIN). This collaboration aims to revolutionize the tracking of motorcycles financed by Watu, marking a significant step towards enhancing asset security and management in the region.

Watu, known for providing loans to over a million individuals across seven African countries, primarily for acquiring motorcycles for taxi services, will now benefit from Nodle’s DePIN infrastructure. This innovative system will enable real-time location tracking of Watu’s financed vehicles, offering enhanced security against theft and providing Watu with comprehensive oversight of its assets.

The launch of Watu’s asset location system is slated for May 2024 in Uganda, with plans for expansion into Kenya, Tanzania, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the coming months. This system will be seamlessly integrated with the Nodle Network, a decentralized mobile network harnessing users’ smartphones as network nodes within a secure DePIN framework. Leveraging the widespread adoption of smartphones and their advanced geolocation capabilities, Nodle’s DePIN ensures extensive coverage and precise tracking accuracy.

Micha Benoliel, co-founder and CEO of Nodle, emphasized the transformative potential of the collaboration with Watu, citing projections that smartphones will constitute 88% of mobile connections by 2030, a significant increase from the current 50%.
