Mothibi Ramusi Assumes Chairmanship at Icasa

Mothibi Ramusi has been appointed as the chairman of the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa), marking a significant milestone in the industry of communications regulation in the country.

The appointment was officially disclosed by Communications Minister Mondli Gungubele in the Government Gazette on Wednesday, solidifying Ramusi’s leadership role within Icasa for a tenure of five years, commencing from the date of his availability.

Ramusi’s career in the technology and telecommunications sector spans several decades, showcasing his wealth of experience and expertise in the field. His journey began as a Systems Engineer at Siemens in 1992, where he played a pivotal role in supporting South Africa’s inaugural democratic elections while seconded to the Independent Electoral Commission.

Over the years, Ramusi has navigated various facets of the industry, delving into policy formulation and regulatory frameworks. He held managerial positions at the former Department of Telecommunications and Postal Services, contributing to frequency planning and monitoring initiatives.

Ramusi’s experience also encompasses significant roles at esteemed organizations such as Transtel, the CSIR, Saab Grintek Technologies, and Cell C, where he served as the executive head for regulatory affairs. His most recent work saw him assume the position of chief information officer at the National Lotteries Commission for a decade, underscoring his commitment to leveraging technology for societal impact.

In assuming the chairmanship of Icasa, Ramusi succeeds acting chair Yolisa Kedama, who has diligently served in the interim role since April 4, 2023. Kedama’s tenure, initially set to conclude on September 30, 2023, was extended to facilitate the search for a permanent successor.
