Monzo Secures £150 Million in Funding to Drive International Expansion

The London-based challenger bank, Monzo, has successfully raised an additional £150 million ($190 million) in funding as part of its ongoing efforts to expand its presence internationally, with a particular focus on the United States market.
This latest funding round follows closely on the heels of Monzo’s £340 million ($425 million) raise just two months ago, bringing the total amount raised by the company in 2024 to over $610 million and a staggering $1.5 billion since its inception nine years ago.
The initial tranche of the Series I round witnessed a rare co-investment from Alphabet’s CapitalG and Google’s GV, alongside prominent investors such as HongShan Capital (formerly Sequoia Capital China), Passion Capital, and Tencent. This extension of funding saw existing investors like CapitalG doubling down on their investment, while also attracting new support from Hedosophia, a previous investor in Monzo’s competitor, Wise.
In March, Monzo had reported a pre-money valuation of £3.6 billion ($4.6 billion), resulting in a post-money valuation of £4 billion ($5 billion). The latest funding round has marginally increased the company’s post-money valuation to £4.1 billion ($5.2 billion), indicating steady growth over the past two months.
Despite its strong presence in the U.K. market, Monzo has been striving to establish itself in the United States for several years. Operating as a mobile banking app in partnership with Ohio’s Sutton Bank since early 2022, Monzo has appointed Conor Walsh, former head of global product for Block’s Cash App, as the CEO of its U.S. operations to spearhead its efforts Stateside.
In its home market of the U.K., Monzo boasts over 9 million retail customers and serves 400,000 clients in the business sector. The company’s revenues doubled in the most recent financial year, fueled by its ambitious expansion plans and innovative product offerings.
“The significant interest from global investors underscores the momentum and resilience of our business model, as well as the dedication of our teams, who prioritize our customers above all else,” remarked Monzo CEO, TS Anil, in a statement to TechCrunch. “With this additional funding to power our ambitions and a pipeline brimming with exciting products, we are confident that the best of Monzo is yet to come.”
With ample resources at its disposal, Monzo is poised to leverage its latest funding to accelerate its growth trajectory, penetrate new markets, and deliver enhanced value to its expanding customer base, both at home and abroad.
