In a surprising development, Microsoft has secured the talents of Mustafa Suleyman and Karén Simonyan, along with several of their colleagues, from the renowned AI startup, Inflection AI. This move adds to Microsoft’s ongoing efforts, under the leadership of Satya Nadella, to aggressively recruit top-tier talent in the tech industry.
Mustafa Suleyman, a co-founder of both Inflection AI and DeepMind—acquired by Google in 2014—will spearhead Microsoft’s newly established consumer AI unit, aptly named Microsoft AI. Simonyan joins as the chief scientist within the same division. Suleyman, now holding the title of EVP and CEO of Microsoft AI, will report directly to CEO Nadella.
Microsoft is set to showcase its latest advancements in AI for consumers, particularly focusing on Microsoft Copilot, Windows, and Surface, in an upcoming event scheduled for Thursday.
The tie-up between Microsoft and Inflection AI isn’t entirely out of the blue. Less than a year ago, Microsoft led a substantial $1.3 billion funding round for the startup. During this investment phase, Inflection AI revealed its ambitious project to construct the world’s largest AI cluster, boasting an impressive array of 22,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs.
Suleyman has also disclosed his expanded role, which includes overseeing AI products and research for Copilot, Bing, and Edge, in a tweet.
Nadella, in a blog post, expressed his enthusiasm for welcoming Suleyman, Simonyan, and their team into Microsoft, hailing them as some of the most accomplished figures in the AI domain. He emphasized their pivotal contributions to advancing AI over the past half-decade.
Inflection AI, founded in 2022 by Reid Hoffman, co-founder of LinkedIn, and Suleyman, aimed to pioneer AI systems capable of engaging in open-ended dialogue, answering queries, and assisting in various tasks.
Hoffman reassured investors of Inflection AI about the favorable outcome of the acquisition, affirming promising future prospects. Sean White, co-founder of Braingels, is slated to assume the role of CEO at Inflection AI.
In response to the transition, Inflection AI disclosed its strategic shift towards focusing on the AI studio business, specializing in building and testing customer generative AI models. The company also announced plans to host Inflection-2.5 on Microsoft Azure, with future expansion to other cloud platforms on the horizon.
Nadella’s pursuit of top talent in AI has been ongoing, with his previous offer to hire OpenAI co-founders Sam Altman and Greg Brockman during their temporary exit from the startup in December.
Reflecting on Microsoft’s trajectory, Nadella underscored the importance of bold innovation in navigating the evolving landscape of AI, emphasizing the imperative to bolster capabilities and capacity for continued advancement.
