Match Group, the parent company of Tinder, has made significant changes to its board of directors and entered an agreement with Elliott Management, an activist investor firm, in a bid to revitalize its performance.

Laura Jones, who is the chief marketing officer at Instacart, and Spencer Rascoff, co-founder of Zillow, have been appointed to Match Group’s board with immediate effect, the company announced on Monday.

These appointments come after what Match described as a “constructive dialogue” with Elliott Management, reflecting the beginning of an “information-sharing” arrangement between the two entities. The move comes after reports from The Wall Street Journal revealed Elliott’s acquisition of a sizable stake, approximately $1 billion, in Match Group.

Elliott Management expressed confidence in Match Group’s potential for significant value creation as the global leader in online dating. Marc Steinberg, a partner at Elliott, emphasized the importance of collaboration with Match’s management and board. He believes that the addition of Laura Jones and Spencer Rascoff will bring valuable skills and perspectives to support Match through its next phase of growth.

Known for its involvement in tech companies and instigating changes, Elliott’s interest in Match Group reflects a broader trend of activist investors seeking to influence corporate strategies. This move by Elliott follows similar actions at firms like Crown Castle and Etsy.

In the fourth quarter of 2023, Match Group reported a 5% year-over-year decrease in total paid users, amounting to 15.2 million users. The company’s growth trajectory has slowed since the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in a significant decline in stock value, down by 79% from its 2021 high.

Match Group operates a portfolio of popular dating apps, including Tinder, Hinge, Match.com, OkCupid, and others. With these strategic changes to its board and collaboration with Elliott Management, Match Group aims to navigate through challenges and reignite growth in the competitive online dating market.
