Mastercard has introduced its latest contactless payment solutions designed to facilitate easy and cost-effective card transactions for businesses. These solutions include features like “tap on the phone,” “QR Pay by link,” and “Payment link,” all accessible via smartphones.
The objective behind Mastercard’s initiative is to offer affordable digital payment alternatives, particularly benefiting Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). By leveraging these tools, SMEs can transform their mobile devices into Point of Sale (POS) terminals, ensuring customers experience a hassle-free payment process. Mastercard envisions spearheading a significant transformation in Nigeria’s payment infrastructure through these innovations.
Kari Tukur, Vice President of Customer Solutions for East and West Africa at Mastercard, highlighted the secure, efficient, and cost-conscious nature of these payment solutions. He emphasized Mastercard’s commitment to delivering seamless digital payment experiences, especially crucial for small businesses and consumers.
Recognizing Nigeria’s burgeoning payment sector, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) introduced the QR Code Payment Framework in January 2021. Subsequently, in October 2022, the CBN further delineated guidelines for contactless payments in Nigeria. These guidelines encapsulate contactless payments as transactions executed without direct physical contact between the payer and the payment device, leveraging technologies like Near Field Communication (NFC), Radio Frequency, or QR Codes.
Nigeria’s vast SME landscape, comprising around 40 million enterprises, stands to benefit immensely from contactless payment methods. While conventional payment terminals often strain SME budgets, Mastercard’s solutions promise affordability. These tools enable even modest businesses to accept payments securely via QR codes, Payment Links, and Contactless payment methods, all integrated with Mastercard’s robust security protocols.
For merchants, QR code payments offer a cost-effective alternative, eliminating the need for additional hardware. Customers can swiftly set up QR payment capabilities on their smartphones, streamlining transactions. Furthermore, contactless payments expedite checkouts, allowing customers to simply tap their cards or devices against the payment terminal, thereby enhancing transaction efficiency.
Incorporating NFC technology ensures these contactless transactions are seamless and swift. This innovation not only elevates consumer convenience but also augments business productivity by reducing transaction durations, enabling merchants to focus on core activities like inventory management.
Consumers stand to gain multiple advantages from this technological leap, encompassing convenience, rapidity, security, and enhanced accessibility. These advancements resonate with Mastercard’s ambitious goal of integrating 1 billion individuals and 50 million micro and small merchants into the digital economy by 2025.
Tukur reaffirmed Mastercard’s dedication to championing innovative payment methodologies, emphasizing the company’s role in promoting financial inclusivity and fostering Nigeria’s economic growth. He concluded by underscoring Mastercard’s vision of crafting an inclusive digital future accessible to all stakeholders.
