In a significant boost to Kenya’s digital and sustainable mobility sectors, the US International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) has announced a substantial $250 million financing package. This announcement came during President William Ruto’s State Visit to Washington in May 2024, highlighting the growing partnership between the two nations.

The financing package includes a strategic mix of loans and grants aimed at accelerating digital connectivity and advancing e-mobility initiatives across Kenya. Key beneficiaries of this investment are several prominent Kenyan companies, including M-KOPA, BasiGo, Mogo Auto, Roam Electric, and Pezesha Africa Limited.

Key Investments

M-KOPA:

M-KOPA, a Nairobi-based digital financing company that serves underbanked Africans, has secured a $51 million loan from DFC. This investment will enhance digital connectivity nationwide and provide affordable smartphones to underserved communities. During a ceremonial signing, DFC CEO Scott Nathan and M-KOPA Co-Founder Jesse Moore formalized the commitment. M-KOPA has already produced over 1 million smartphones locally and plans to expand its production facility with the support of DFC and the Kenyan government.

Mogo Auto Kenya and BasiGo:

In line with President Ruto’s Africa Green Industrialisation Initiative, DFC has provided a $10 million loan to Mogo Auto Kenya and BasiGo. Mogo Kenya specializes in used vehicle loans, logbook loans, and boda boda (motorcycle) loans, while BasiGo is a Kenyan electric bus manufacturer that recently launched its production line. This investment promotes sustainable transportation solutions in Kenya.

Roam Electric:

Roam Electric has received a $10 million loan to support the design, development, and deployment of electric motorcycles, buses, and charging infrastructure in Kenya. This initiative aligns with Kenya’s push towards sustainable e-mobility.

Pezesha Africa Limited:

Pezesha, a digital financial enabler for SMEs, has been granted a $500,000 Technical Assistance grant. This grant will help leverage advanced computing technologies to improve credit scoring algorithms, facilitating better access to finance for small and medium-sized enterprises.

Strengthening Bilateral Ties

President Ruto’s visit to the United States underscored the enduring 60-year partnership between Kenya and the US. President Biden welcomed Ruto to celebrate and deepen this relationship, which was marked by the release of a US government report, ‘FACT SHEET: Kenya State Visit to the United States,’ highlighting key investments in Kenya’s digital and renewable energy sectors.

Additional Investments

Beyond DFC’s financing, tech giants Google and Microsoft have announced significant investments in Kenya’s digital infrastructure. Microsoft, in partnership with G42, plans to establish a $1 billion data centre campus in Kenya, powered by renewable geothermal energy and water conservation technology. Microsoft’s initiative also includes AI and internet connectivity projects.

Similarly, Google has unveiled plans for a fibre optic cable project, cybersecurity assistance, and AI development initiatives in Kenya. The Umoja fibre optic cable project, notably, will be the first to directly connect Africa and Australia, enhancing intercontinental connectivity.

Impact on Kenya’s Future

These collective investments from the US government, DFC, and leading technology companies position Kenya for a transformative leap in its digital and sustainable energy landscapes. The influx of capital and technological advancements will not only enhance the nation’s technological capabilities but also contribute to economic growth, job creation, and sustainable development.

With robust support and strategic investments, Kenya is set to become a leader in digital innovation and sustainable mobility in Africa, paving the way for a brighter and more connected future.
