In celebration of Mandela Month and inspired by this year’s theme, “It is in our hands to combat poverty and inequity,” Vodacom is taking a bold step toward digital inclusion by offering loyal prepaid customers still using 2G handsets an opportunity to upgrade to a 4G Kicka 6 Smartphone for R67. This symbolic price reflects the 67 years Nelson Mandela dedicated to fighting for social justice and equality.

The campaign, which launched in July 2025, will initially roll out in KwaZulu-Natal before expanding to Mpumalanga and Limpopo provinces. Vodacom has pre-selected eligible prepaid customers who are still reliant on outdated 2G technology. These customers can visit selected Vodacom stores to redeem the offer, trading in their current 2G handsets for a much more powerful 4G enabled Kicka 6 normally priced at R699.

Empowering Through Connectivity

“Millions of South Africans still rely on 2G devices, limiting their ability to access essential digital services such as education, employment, and financial tools,” says Rishaad Tayob, Director of Consumer Business at Vodacom South Africa. “By offering affordable 4G smartphones, we are empowering people to participate fully in the digital economy. Following Madiba’s legacy, we each have the power to make a positive impact.”

Free Data to Support Digital Journey

To ensure that customers can make the most of their new devices, Vodacom is also including a 20GB Buy and Get data package worth R149, provided users recharge with at least R29. This incentive is designed to help users confidently begin their digital journeys whether that means accessing online learning platforms, applying for jobs, or simply staying connected with loved ones.

Mandela Day Giveaway 67 Smartphones

In further celebration of Mandela Day on July 18, Vodacom will give away 67 additional smartphones as part of its Surprise and Delight initiative. Selected from participants in Vodacom’s Daily V-Up journey, these recipients will be invited to the Vodacom World Store in Midrand to trade in their old 2G devices for a new 4G smartphone completely free of charge.

.A Commitment to a Better Future

“Our Mandela Month promotions support our ongoing purpose-led efforts to offer affordable entry-level smartphones and handset financing solutions,” adds Tayob. “By making 4G device ownership more accessible, we can connect everyone to a better future.” By helping more people transition from basic to smart connectivity, Vodacom is showing how business driven solutions can support social progress broadening access to opportunity in a way that reflects Mandela’s vision for a more equal South Africa.
