Impala Platinum, known as Implats, has announced a significant R9 billion deal to increase Black ownership in the South African mining industry. This agreement will result in Black investors holding a 13% stake in both Implats and the Royal Bafokeng Platinum (RBPlat) business it acquired last year.

Implats, a Johannesburg-based company, secured control of RBPlat nearly a year ago after an intense 18-month takeover battle with Northam Platinum. Prior to this acquisition, the largest shareholder in RBPlat was the Bafokeng nation, a community located in South Africa’s North West Province.

As a condition of the acquisition approval, Implats committed to enhancing Black ownership within the platinum producer. This initiative falls under the Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) framework, a policy designed to promote broader economic participation among previously disadvantaged groups.

According to a statement released by Implats on Monday, the new ownership structure includes a 4% stake each for local communities and employees. Additionally, a consortium led by Siyanda Resources will hold a 5% share.

This move aligns with South Africa’s mining charter, introduced in 2004, which aims to distribute mining benefits more equitably among the nation’s citizens and address historical racial disparities from the apartheid era. The charter initially set a minimum Black shareholding target of 26%.

Implats’ latest deal marks a significant step towards achieving these objectives, fostering greater inclusivity and economic empowerment within the mining sector.
