Harmony Gold Declares June 5 a Day of Safety After Fatal Incident at Joel Mine

Tragic Fall-of-Ground Incident at Joel Mine
Harmony Gold Mining Company has declared June 5 a Day of Safety across all its South African operations, following a fatal fall-of-ground (FoG) incident at its Joel mine in the Free State. The accident resulted in the death of an employee and has triggered company-wide reflection and action to reinforce safety culture in its underground operations.
Company Expresses Condolences and Calls for Reflection
The incident occurred in late May 2025 when a section of rock collapsed underground during routine operations. Despite rapid intervention by emergency teams, the affected employee tragically succumbed to their injuries. Harmony Gold CEO Peter Steenkamp extended heartfelt condolences to the deceased’s family, friends, and co-workers. He stated, “Every life matter, and every incident is one too many,” underlining the company’s commitment to a zero-harm working environment.
Day of Safety to Reinforce Awareness and Training
To honor the deceased and reemphasize the importance of safety, Harmony will suspend all operations on June 5. During the Day of Safety, over 30,000 employees across all sites in Gauteng, the Free State, and Northwest provinces will participate in structured safety activities. These will include hazard identification training, risk assessments, and emergency response simulations.read more here
Investigation Underway to Prevent Recurrence
Harmony Gold has launched a full investigation into the root causes of the fall-of-ground incident. The investigation, which includes independent safety auditors and oversight from the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE), aims to identify technical or procedural failings and implement corrective measures across affected operations. Enhanced geological monitoring and support systems will also be evaluated.
Industry and Union Support for Safety Initiative
The Minerals Council South Africa has publicly supported Harmony’s Day of Safety, describing it as a necessary and commendable response to a tragic event. Labor unions, including the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), have echoed this support while calling for deeper investments in advanced safety technologies and increased worker involvement in risk management strategies. “Let this not only be a day of mourning but a call to action for safer mines,” a NUM spokesperson stated.
Long-Term Commitment to Zero Harm
While South Africa’s mining industry has seen marked safety improvements over recent years, FoG incidents remain a critical risk, particularly in deep-level mines like Joel. Harmony’s initiative sends a strong message that safety is not negotiable. Through structured training, collective reflection, and enhanced safety protocols, the company aims to ensure such tragedies are not repeated.
The Day of Safety marks a somber but vital milestone for Harmony Gold. By pausing operations to focus on education, reflection, and accountability, the company aims to turn a tragic loss into a catalyst for long-term cultural and procedural change. In Harmony’s words, “Safety is not just a policy it’s a shared responsibility.”
