Dr. Steve Chingwaru, hailing from a lineage of legendary prospectors, including his grandfather George Nolan, who discovered lithium in Zimbabwe, has made a remarkable breakthrough in unlocking vast gold reserves worth approximately R450 billion.
Chingwaru’s pioneering work in geo metallurgy has captured global attention, particularly from mining companies eager to tap into the immense potential hidden within mine dumps.
His research, focused on historical mine waste known as tailings from the Witwatersrand, has revealed over six billion tonnes of material containing substantial gold content.
The primary objective of Chingwaru’s study was to accurately quantify and characterize these gold reserves, while also devising efficient methods for extraction.
While the concept of invisible gold, consisting of minute particles embedded within other minerals, is not new, Chingwaru’s findings have shed light on the staggering amount of gold concealed within these mine dumps.
“Traditionally, the low concentration of gold within tailings was deemed uneconomical,” Chingwaru explained. However, with high-grade gold deposits becoming increasingly scarce due to extensive mining, the extraction of gold from lower-concentration sources has become more feasible.
Although some mining giants have initiated processes to extract residual gold from tailings, the conventional cyanide extraction method has proven to be inefficient, recovering only about 30% of the gold.
Chingwaru’s inquiry into the whereabouts of the remaining 70% led to the development of innovative techniques for safely extracting gold from pyrite, a mineral commonly found in tailings.
Beyond the economic benefits, Chingwaru emphasizes the environmental advantages of mining these deposits, notably in reducing acid mine drainage, a significant issue in mining regions.
“Processing the pyrite not only eliminates the primary cause of acid mine drainage but also generates economic value,” he remarked. Furthermore, the process has the potential to yield additional valuable byproducts such as copper, cobalt, and nickel.
As Chingwaru’s groundbreaking research continues to gain traction, it offers a promising pathway for the mining industry to unlock immense wealth while fostering environmental sustainability—a testament to the transformative power of scientific inquiry and innovation.
