Gautrain is adding an e-hailing service to its transport offering, giving passengers another way to travel to and from its stations. The move addresses a gap that has existed since the rail network launched. While Gautrain provides fast connections between Johannesburg, Pretoria and OR Tambo International Airport, many commuters still need another form of transport to complete their journey. Until now, that has meant relying on ride hailing apps, taxis, private vehicles or Gautrain’s feeder buses.
Filling a practical need
The new service is intended to work alongside Gautrain’s trains and buses. It gives passengers another option where feeder buses do not operate or where a direct trip is more convenient. For regular commuters, getting to the station can sometimes take longer than the train ride itself. By adding an e-hailing service, Gautrain is trying to remove that extra step instead of leaving it to other transport providers. Gautrain is not entering an empty market. Uber and Bolt already have a large presence across Gauteng, and many passengers use them as part of their daily commute. The difference is that Gautrain’s service is tied to its own network. Rather than targeting every type of trip, it focuses on passengers travelling to or from a Gautrain station. Whether commuters switch will come down to price, availability and how quickly they can get a ride.
More than a rail service
The launch shows Gautrain is gradually expanding the services around its rail network instead of focusing only on trains. Public transport works best when passengers can complete an entire journey without too many transfers or long waits between different modes of transport. Adding an e-hailing option is another step towards making that possible. For commuters, the change is simple. It gives them another transport option. For Gautrain, it is an opportunity to keep passengers connected to its network from the start of their journey to the end.
