The landscape of the mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) market is evolving, and Sashin Sookroo, CEO of FNB Connect, sees this as a positive development. MVNOs, like FNB Connect, function similarly to traditional mobile network operators (MNOs) but without owning their own connectivity infrastructure. Instead, they leverage roaming agreements with MNOs to provide cellular services to their customers.
In the South African market, FNB Connect stands as a prominent player, boasting 879,000 active SIMs in 2022, with plans to reach one million in the near future. However, recent years have witnessed the emergence of several new MVNOs offering compelling products, including unlimited calling plans and large data bundles at competitive prices.
Traditionally, most MVNOs in South Africa have operated on Cell C’s network. However, the introduction of MTN’s MVNO offering in 2020 opened doors for new players, such as Melon Mobile, TFG Connect, and Pick n Pay Mobile, to leverage the country’s second-largest network.
In a recent discussion with MyBroadband, Sookroo highlighted FNB Connect’s robust customer growth over the past year, attributing it in part to the expansion of the MVNO market. He emphasized that FNB Connect’s unique proposition lies in its customer base, which comprises banked clients. This synergy between mobile services and banking offers a distinct advantage in customer retention and satisfaction.
Moreover, FNB Connect has strengthened its connectivity by adding MTN as a roaming partner, significantly enhancing its coverage. Additionally, customers benefit from the bank’s eBucks program, which rewards users with free Connect data and minutes, resulting in substantial savings for over 75% of customers.
Despite the competition posed by other MVNOs offering attractive pricing and value propositions, Sookroo remains optimistic about FNB Connect’s future. He hinted at forthcoming offerings aimed at delivering higher value and affordability, leveraging the MVNO’s network quality and coverage. Furthermore, customers can expect enhanced rewards through FNB’s partnerships, promising added value in the near future.
In line with technological advancements, Sookroo also teased the introduction of eSIM support, providing customers with more flexibility and convenience in accessing FNB Connect services.
As the MVNO market continues to evolve, FNB Connect remains committed to delivering innovative solutions and superior value to its customers, ensuring a competitive edge in the dynamic telecommunications landscape.
