Eskom has confirmed the successful full load rejection test for the renovated Unit 1 at the Koeberg Power Station on December 30, 2023.
According to Eskom, this test was pivotal after the unit’s new steam generators were installed, aligning with the stipulations of the South African Grid Code (SAGC).
Marking a significant milestone, Eskom views this accomplishment as a positive precursor for their upcoming steam generator replacement project for Unit 2.
The purpose of the test was to validate the unit’s capability to manage its auxiliary load and restore stability post an unexpected disconnection from the national grid.
Eskom elaborated on the complexities of the steam generator replacement project, highlighting modifications to various plant components and control systems. This necessitated verifying the unit’s response to a full load rejection scenario, as mandated by the SAGC.
Koeberg’s Unit 1 remained offline for almost a year, from December 2022 to November 2023, due to steam generator replacements and comprehensive refuelling. This downtime resulted in a loss of approximately 980MW in generating capacity.
Initially targeted for a June 2023 return, unexpected challenges led to multiple delays in the project timeline. Addressing concerns, Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa expressed confidence in avoiding similar setbacks with Unit 2’s refurbishment, which began its offline phase on December 11, 2023.
Ramokgopa stated, “Reflecting on past challenges with Unit 1, we’ve garnered lessons and are committed to ensuring timely restoration for Unit 2.”
However, consumers can expect staggered operational periods for both units in the upcoming years, as each will necessitate 200-day outages post the refurbishment of Unit 2.
