Eskom Expands Solar Push for Large Power Users in South Africa

Eskom has taken a step in South Africa’s energy journey. The utility announced a new offtake arrangement that will unlock 291 megawatts of solar PV capacity for large power users. On Monday, Eskom CEO Dan Marokane described the initiative as a crucial milestone. “This is the next step in the focused execution of our strategy to integrate additional renewable energy into the grid, in line with global electricity industry trends for environmentally sustainable solutions that support broader decarbonisation objectives,” he said. His message reflects a utility determined to modernise, focusing equally on sustainability and competitiveness.

Power-Purchase Agreements for Industry

The programme gives large power users the opportunity to enter into long-term power-purchase agreements, granting direct access to renewable electricity. For businesses struggling with load shedding and rising costs, securing clean and reliable energy presents a much-needed breakthrough.

Storage and Stability Measures

Eskom plans to go beyond solar panels. The company will complement solar PV and other renewables with energy storage systems and pumped hydro. These technologies will act as stabilisers, storing surplus power during low demand and releasing it when pressure on the grid increases. Alongside nuclear and gas, identified as key baseload sources, renewables will strengthen the overall energy mix.

The initiative comes just over a year into Eskom’s turnaround strategy, which is aimed not only at ending load shedding but also at positioning the utility as a long-term sustainable energy supplier. “We have seen strong interest in Eskom’s capabilities in green energy supply, which this programme demonstrates,” Marokane noted.
