Eskom Rolls Out 20 EVs, Plans 100 More For full Electric Fleet Transition

Eskom has announced the purchase of 20 electric vehicles (EVs), ranging from light delivery vehicles to light trucks, as part of its long-term plan to electrify its entire fleet. The utility confirmed on Wednesday that these vehicles will be deployed primarily within its distribution and generation divisions. Eskom further revealed plans to acquire an additional 100 EVs in the “near future,” underscoring its commitment to sustainable mobility.

This announcement follows earlier developments in August 2024, when Eskom installed 10 charging stations across five sites to support the growing adoption of electric transportation.

Advancing Charging Infrastructure

The newly installed charging stations include both direct current (DC) fast chargers, capable of supplying up to 60kW, and dual alternating current (AC) chargers with 22kW capacity. Eskom explained that AC chargers are particularly suitable for daytime workplace charging for staff and visitors, as well as overnight charging of fleet vehicles.

The utility emphasized that these investments form part of a broader strategy to create a reliable ecosystem for electric transport while supporting South Africa’s climate goals.

A Commitment to Sustainability

“Eskom is taking steps to transform how South Africans move in a world where climate change is no longer a distant threat but an urgent reality,” the company said in a statement.

Agnes Mlambo, Acting Group Executive for Distribution, added that the initiative goes beyond vehicle mobility. “The launch of these vehicles is not only about mobility, it is about reimagining the energy landscape, reducing carbon emissions, and ensuring every community benefits from the transition to sustainable transport.”

Public Charging Stations Rollout

In addition to electrifying its internal fleet, Eskom has committed to rolling out 55 public EV charging stations over the next two years. These facilities will be spread across multiple sites, helping accelerate broader EV adoption among the public.

The distribution division Eskom’s largest vehicle user has set an ambitious target of achieving full fleet electrification by 2035.

Eskom also stressed that grid readiness remains a top priority. Smart charging systems and time of use tariffs are being developed to optimize energy use. These measures aim to lower the cost of EV ownership while ensuring a sustainable balance between electricity supply and demand.
