Elon Musk’s Tesla Cybertruck is officially ready for delivery

Tesla is on the verge of commencing deliveries for its long-anticipated Cybertruck electric pickup after overcoming production challenges as said by CEO Elon Musk. The Cybertruck, Tesla’s first new model in almost four years, holds significant importance for the company’s reputation as an innovator in the electric vehicle (EV) space. Musk acknowledged that the unique design of the Cybertruck presented production challenges, describing it as a “radical” product.
The Cybertruck, starting at $60,990 (R1,138,884.57), is positioned to generate sales and contribute to Tesla’s cash flow, though not on the scale of the high-volume Models 3 and Y. Elon Musk admitted that the Cybertruck might take a year to 18 months to become a significant contributor to cash flow.
Made of shiny stainless steel with a distinct flat and angular design, the Cybertruck’s appearance is partly inspired by a car-turned-submarine in the 1977 James Bond movie “The Spy Who Loved Me.” Musk showcased the vehicle at an event in Austin, Texas, where he handed over the keys to about a dozen customers. The pricing for different variants, including the “Cyberbeast,” was not announced during the event, but Tesla’s website later displayed estimated starting prices for various versions.
Musk had initially promised a starting price of $40,000 in 2019, but the Cybertruck’s base version is now priced higher. The highest performance variant and all-wheel-drive versions are estimated to start at about $100,000 and $80,000, respectively, with availability in the coming year. The rear-wheel-drive version, priced around $61,000, is expected to be available in 2025.

Despite its delayed launch, the Cybertruck has garnered significant attention, with over a million reservation holders who have placed $100 deposits. Musk acknowledged that the Cybertruck’s design might limit its appeal compared to traditional pickup trucks focused on utility.
Entering a competitive market alongside rivals like Ford’s F-150 Lightning, Rivian Automotive’s R1T, and General Motors’ Hummer EV, the Cybertruck faces challenges related to its unconventional design and production complexities. Musk emphasized the model’s innovation, but experts suggest it may have a narrower appeal compared to traditional pickups.
The Cybertruck’s delayed launch underscores the significant challenges in reaching volume production, attributed to the truck’s unique design and new technology. Despite these challenges, analysts anticipate that the Cybertruck will find success among a more affluent and early-adopter audience.
