DStv’s parent, Groupe Canal+, has secured a last-minute deal with Warner Bros. Discovery, ending weeks of uncertainty and ensuring that 12 channels remain on the DStv line-up.
Agreement Covers Africa and Parts of Europe
Canal+ confirmed on Wednesday that the deal spans South Africa, the wider African market and several European territories where it operates. The announcement follows warnings issued to subscribers earlier this month that negotiations had stalled and that key channels could be dropped from their bouquets.
The arrangement is not limited to a temporary extension. It provides for the continued carriage of key Warner Bros. Discovery channels and extends the distribution of HBO Max across multiple regions, strengthening Canal+’s entertainment, children’s, news and factual programming portfolio in African markets and restoring stability following a period of uncertainty.
Channels Confirmed to Stay on DStv
All 12 channels previously flagged for possible removal will remain available to DStv subscribers. These include Discovery Channel, CNN International, TLC, Discovery Family, Real Time, TNT Africa, Food Network, HGTV, Investigation Discovery, Cartoon Network, Cartoonito and Travel Channel.
This development will reassure subscribers who, from 1 December, received on-screen alerts and email notices warning that the channels could be removed, after negotiations between Canal+ and Warner Bros. Discovery broke down and raised the prospect of abrupt changes to popular packages.
Implications Beyond Africa
The agreement also extends into Europe. In Central and Eastern Europe, Cartoon Network, Cartoonito and CNN International have been renewed in markets such as Romania, Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Additional Warner Bros. Discovery channels, including Warner TV, Cinemax and TVN, have also been renewed in select European territories where they are carried, though these channels are not available on African platforms.
