Cape Winelands Airport Set for Completion in 2025

A significant airport expansion program, valued at R7 billion, is currently in progress at Cape Winelands Airport, representing a crucial milestone in the development and accessibility of the Cape Winelands region.

Established in 1943 and primarily catering to general aviation traffic, the airport’s expansion and upgrades are slated for completion by 2027, according to reports from Travel News.

Deon Cloete, Managing Director of Cape Winelands Airport, expressed enthusiasm about the ongoing expansion, emphasizing the manifold benefits a commercial airport in the region will bring. He said, “We see ourselves as an important part of the regional value chain, which is a responsibility we take seriously.”

Recent press releases unveiled development plans for the airport, featuring vineyards integrated into the landscaping to reflect the region’s wine culture. The expansion includes open spaces with amenities such as a plaza, hotel, conference center, wine tasting experiences, an outdoor amphitheater for events hosting up to 5,000 people, and an aviation museum.

Within the airport’s controlled airside area, a portion of the land is earmarked for a botanical garden featuring a diverse collection of indigenous fynbos. The airport aims to offer contemporary amenities and services designed to enhance the overall travel experience. This includes advanced technology-equipped check-in counters for swift processing, spacious and comfortable waiting lounges with ergonomic seating, and a commitment to achieving self-sufficiency and off-the-grid status for water and electricity to the extent possible.
