BYD Unveils Groundbreaking Hybrid Powertrain with 2,000 Kilometre Range

BYD has unveiled a revolutionary hybrid powertrain capable of traveling over 2,000 kilometres without recharging or refuelling, intensifying the competitive landscape against automotive giants Toyota Motor Corp. and Volkswagen AG.

The advanced technology, aimed at extending BYD’s lead over its traditional rivals, will be launched immediately in two sedans priced under 100,000 yuan (approximately R252,846), the company announced during a live-streamed event from China on Tuesday evening.

The enhanced range allows some of BYD’s dual-mode plug-in hybrid vehicles to cover distances equivalent to Singapore to Bangkok, New York to Miami, or Munich to Madrid on a single charge and a full tank of gas. This milestone represents BYD’s latest advancement in reducing fuel consumption since introducing hybrids in 2008.

Shenzhen-based BYD has disrupted the Chinese auto market with widespread price cuts, impacting profitability. The aggressive pricing of these ultra-long-range hybrids is expected to further fuel the ongoing price war.

BYD sold 3 million cars last year and has delivered nearly 1 million vehicles in the first four months of this year. Remarkably, one out of every two hybrids sold in China is a BYD, highlighting the company’s stronghold in this segment and its significance as a revenue and profit driver.

Globally, automakers are striving to alleviate consumers’ range anxiety and develop vehicles that are environmentally friendly. On the same day as BYD’s announcement, Toyota unveiled prototypes of a new generation of internal combustion engines that can run on hydrogen, gasoline, or other fuels alongside batteries.

During the event, BYD claimed that in tests, its plug-in hybrid achieved a range of up to 2,500 kilometres. Initially, these upgrades will be available in cars manufactured in China, with plans for international exports soon.

Electric and hybrid vehicles continue to push the boundaries of range to address consumer concerns about switching from traditional gasoline-powered vehicles.

BYD ceased production of fossil fuel-powered cars in early 2022 and has been increasing hybrid exports to emerging markets that lack extensive battery charging infrastructure.

The first two vehicles equipped with this long-range capability are mid-sized sedans: the Qin L and the Seal 06, both unveiled at the Beijing Auto Show in April. These models are part of BYD’s Dynasty and Ocean series, respectively.

BYD’s latest innovation is set to redefine the hybrid vehicle market, offering an unprecedented combination of range and affordability, and positioning the company as a formidable competitor in the global automotive industry.
