BYD Atto 8 Enters South Africa’s SUV Market

South Africa’s plug-in hybrid SUV market has a new entrant with the arrival of the BYD Atto 8, a large 7-seater crossover that combines long-distance practicality with strong electric performance and premium-level features. Positioned as a family-focused flagship, it enters the segment with serious specifications, bold sizing, and pricing that places it firmly in the upper-mid SUV category. The model is known internationally under different names, including the “Tang L” in China and the “Sealion 8” in other markets, but it arrives locally as the Atto 8.
In terms of size, it measures 5,040 mm in length, placing it above several established three-row SUVs. It slightly exceeds the length of the fully electric Volvo EX90 and sits close to the Audi Q7, reinforcing its positioning as a full-size family crossover rather than a compact urban SUV.
Variant Line-up, Pricing and Powertrain Architecture
BYD is offering the Atto 8 in two variants at launch: the Premium and the Performance AWD. The Premium model is priced from R1,059,900, while the Performance AWD sits higher at R1,259,900. Both versions use a plug-in hybrid system combining a petrol engine with electric drive for improved efficiency and flexibility.
At the core of the system is a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine producing 110 kW and 220 Nm. In the Premium variant, this is paired with a single electric motor delivering 200 kW and 315 Nm, powered by a 19.0 kWh battery. Combined output stands at 205 kW, with a claimed electric-only range of around 75 km and a total range of up to 892 km.
The Performance AWD variant adds a second electric motor on the rear axle, contributing an additional 200 kW and 360 Nm. This increases total system output to 359 kW and transforms the vehicle’s performance profile significantly. It also upgrades to a larger 35.6 kWh battery, enabling an estimated 130 km of electric driving and a combined range of about 844 km. Acceleration is notably strong for a large SUV, with a 0–100 km/h time of roughly 4.9 seconds.
Equipment, Interior Specification and Practicality
Feature levels vary across both trims, but even the base Premium version includes 20-inch alloy wheels, a 15.6-inch infotainment display, a 10-speaker audio system, wireless charging, 3-zone climate control, a panoramic sunroof, powered front seats with heating and ventilation, and a suite of driver-assistance systems.
The Performance model builds on this with 21-inch wheels, adaptive suspension, a head-up display, enhanced seat adjustability, massage functions for both front and second-row passengers, second-row heating and ventilation, ambient lighting, and a 21-speaker sound system.
Practicality remains a core part of the design. With all three rows in use, boot space is 270 litres. Folding the third row increases this to 960 litres, while flattening both rear rows expands capacity to 1,960 litres, placing it in line with other large family SUVs where versatility is prioritised over uncompromised cargo volume in full seating configuration.
