South Africa’s Vehicle Trade Deficit with China and India Hits R90 Billion

South Africa’s vehicle trade deficit with China and India reached approximately R90 billion in 2025. The deficit includes a R57.7 billion deficit with China and a R32.1 billion deficit with India. There has been a surge in Imports with Chinese vehicle imports growing dramatically and up 368% over four years, while Indian imports rose 135%. In 2024–2025, China and India together accounted for roughly 75% of South Africa’s total vehicle imports. This is against a backdrop of a struggling local automotive manufacturing sector that has seen the exit of major manufacturer Nissan this year. Only around 37% of vehicles sold in South Africa are locally manufactured. Imports now dominate the local market, threatening jobs in the automotive sector.

The imbalance highlights classic challenges in trade with manufacturing powerhouses such as China: South Africa exports raw materials/minerals to China and India but imports high-value finished goods. Industry bodies and unions are pushing for stronger localisation policies under the Automotive Production and Development Programme (APDP). While China’s decision to grant zero tariffs on imports from 53 African countries (effective from 1 May 2026) continues to generate optimism among exporters, it however remains to be seen if there is real value gained as most exports from Africa remain raw materials or unprocessed goods.

Africa Remains Fastest Growing Region Globally Despite Headwinds

Africa’s economic growth is expected to slow slightly to 4.2% this year from 4.4% last year, the African Development Bank said, as Middle East tensions push up fuel and food costs, before picking up again in 2027. While this is still higher than the global average of 3.1%, this growth comes off a low base of GDP. The upside is that Africa remains one of the fastest-growing regions in the world, with broad-based growth, and with 22 countries growing above 5% in 2025, and 12 African economies ranked among the world’s 20 fastest-growing in 2025.

Despite last year’s shocks from trade and geopolitical tensions, the 54-nation continent remained one of the world’s fastest-growing regions alongside Asia, outpacing Europe and Latin America, the AfDB said in its annual outlook published yesterday. The report emphasises the need for stronger domestic resource mobilisation, fiscal discipline, regional integration (AfCFTA), and capital market development.
