US and China Agree on Trade Agreement Framework

According to various news reports, China and the United States have agreed to a framework for a potential trade deal that will be discussed when their respective leaders meet later this week, according to the US treasury secretary, Scott Bessent. The deal will include a “final deal” on TikTok’s US operations and a deferral on China’s tightened rare earth minerals controls. Bessent also commented that he did not anticipate the 100% tariff on Chinese goods threatened by President Donald Trump coming into force, while China is expected to resume soybean purchases from the US. The two global economic giants, are seeking to avoid further escalation in a trade war that has resulted in global supply-chain disruptions and market volatility for months. Safe haven commodities such as gold and silver have subsequently seen downward pressure on prices with gold down over 3% and silver dropping over 4% in the past week.

South African Renewable Energy Generation Sees Rapid Expansion

The 2025 Renewable Energy Grid Survey, released yesterday, shows that there has been a significant increase in renewable energy development in the country. There is currently around 28 Giga Watts (GW) of power being generated and 82 Giga Watts of battery storage installations completed.According to a presentation by Ronald Marais, the strategic grid planning manager at the National Transmission Company of South Africa, the Northern Cape province leads the renewable installations with 49GW of renewable energy capacity, a 69% growth from only 29GW a year ago. However, the national picture is one where grid constraints are a major constraint in the renewable energy supply, with the electricity grid already at full capacity in the Eastern, Northern and Western Cape areas. Marais sounded a warning that the grid load could become a restricting factor in the amount of renewable generation that can be added to the grid going forward.

IMF Backs Malawian Growth Plan

The International Monetary Fund has held productive talks with Malawi’s new government during its annual meetings in Washington this month, an IMF spokesperson said on Monday, as the Southern African country looks to secure a new lending programme. Malawi’s last IMF programme was terminated five months ago after it failed to restore macroeconomic stability. Newly elected President Peter Mutharika was sworn in as president earlier this month after a disastrous five year period economic decline under Lazarus Chakwera’s presidency. The Country has seen poor growth in GDP with 1.8% in 2024. Efforts are now underway to grow and support national food production with sugar tea and tobacco exports the main income generating products for the nation.
