Major Zimbabwean Gas Production Agreement Signed

Australia’s Invictus Energy, has signed a petroleum production sharing agreement (PPSA) with the Zimbabwean authorities yesterday. This is a key step in moving towards production at its Cabora Bassa gas project, company executives said. In 2023, Invictus declared large gas condensate discoveries at its Mukuyu gas field, potentially opening up a new inland oil and gas frontier in Zimbabwe. Invictus is now preparing to drill its next Musuma-1 exploration ‌well in the second half of 2026, targeting 1.2 trillion cubic feet of gas and 73 million barrels of condensate resource according to company statements.

Invictus CEO Scott Macmillan indicated that the PPSA would be a hybrid model which meant the state could choose between taking a portion of the profits or a portion of the gas eventually produced. Zimbabwe’s finance minister, Mthuli Ncube, said the agreement was proof the Southern African country is determined to unlock its natural resources for future generations

Bitcoin Hits an Eight week Low

Bitcoin’s price has dropped sharply to around $72,960 this morning, extending a week of losses to a loss of around -6% and reaching its lowest level in eight weeks. This aligns with signs of cooling institutional demand and lack of Investor confidence in further short-term gains. US spot-Bitcoin ETFs have seen around $1 billion in net outflows so far this month, bringing a two-month streak of inflows to an end. Year-to-date Bitcoin is -16.69% down and down -31% year-on-year. Escalating tensions and U.S. military involvement related to Iran have triggered a classic risk-off move across global markets with Bitcoin being marked as a high-beta risk asset right now. Adding to the price squeeze, investor profit-taking has caused steady outflows this week as investors lock in gains from the recent rally.

Platinum Slides to a Two-Month Low

Platinum futures slipped to around $1,880 per ounce this morning, hitting a two-month low. The platinum market remains structurally tight, with the World Platinum Investment Council projecting a fourth consecutive annual supply deficit in 2026. Automotive demand also remains broadly resilient, supported by hybrid vehicle growth and tighter emissions standards, while jewelry consumption weakens under higher prices, particularly in China. Year-to-date Platinum is down by around-9%, however it remains up around +75% on a year-on year comparison.

South Africa, the largest producer of Platinum globally has seen Refined PGM output increase by 41% year-on-year in Q1 2026, while Mine supply (overall PGM), lifted by 22% year-on-year in Q1 of this year. Despite the improvements, analysts (including WPIC) expect South African mine production to remain relatively flat for the full year 2026 compared to 2025, or show only modest growth (around 1%).Total refined production is forecast to recover to approximately 4.0 million ounces (from a weaker 2025).
