Business News Today

Nigeria’s Dangote Refinery Hits a Major Operational Milestone.

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery in Lagos has successfully processed over 700,000 barrels per day (bpd) during recent tests, exceeding its original 650,000 bpd nameplate capacity. This solidifies its position as the world’s largest single-train refinery. It marks a significant step toward Nigeria’s goal of reducing fuel imports and achieving energy self-sufficiency. The refinery is currently supplying petrol, diesel, and jet fuel domestically and exporting to other African countries, Europe, the US, and beyond

This also supports the proposed additional mega-refinery project announced by backed by Nigerian industrialist Aliko Dangote which is igniting regional competition in East Africa. Kenya and Tanzania are keen contenders to host what could become one of the continent’s most transformative energy investments. The refinery, still in its planning and expansion phase, is being viewed as a potential game changer for a region that remains heavily dependent on imported refined fuel while Kenya looks to launch and expand its local oil production in a effort to position themselves ahead of rivals Tanzania.

Startup Funding Improving in Africa

Recent reports indicate African startups have raised around $900 million in equity funding across 74 deals in 2026 so far. Notable large deals include Spiro’s significant Series E round for expanding its electric motorcycle battery-swapping network. While deal volume remains selective, funding continues to flow into mobility, fintech, energy, and climate solutions. This reflects a maturing ecosystem where quality and proven models are attracting capital despite global caution. Other major deals so far in 2026 include SolarAfrica (South Africa, clean energy / solar) who raised around $94 million early in the year in one of the largest climate-tech deals, and Egypt’s Breadfast, a quick-commerce / grocery delivery service also secured around $50 million in pre-Series C funding.

AFC’s $2 Billion Raise – Set to Shape African Developments

Africa Finance Corporation (AFC), has successfully raised a record US$2 billion syndicated loan, which materially improves the Corporation’s capacity to continue scaling investments in critical sectors and industrial ecosystems across Africa. The raise furthermore indicates strong global investor support for AFC’s rapid buildout of integrated infrastructure and industrial platforms that will be helping shape Africa’s next phase of economic growth.

The transaction was initially launched at a target of US$1.6 billion before being upsized to US$2 billion. Participation from banks across Asia Pacific (35%), Europe (35%), the Middle East (25%) and Africa (5%) reflects broad international support for AFC’s differentiated investment model and long-term strategy, achieved against a backdrop of heightened geopolitical uncertainty and market volatility. Samaila Zubairu, President & CEO of AFC, said: “This transaction reflects growing recognition that Africa’s next phase of growth will be driven not by isolated projects, but by integrated infrastructure systems that connect energy, transport, logistics, industry and technology.”
