Nigerian Super Highway gets Funding

Nigerian national infrastructure and logistics sector is posed to get a welcome upgrade, after the West African Nation concluded a substantial $747 million loan for the development of the new 700km Calabar Highway. Once completed, it will link the capital Abuja to a key coastal port city Calabar. Funding was raised from a syndicate led by Deutsche Bank AG, and includes the African Export-Import Bank, the Abu Dhabi Exports Office, the ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development as well as Zenith Bank. According to a statement issued by the Finance Ministry, the government plans to establish a toll for the road to “ensure the project’s operational and financial sustainability,” the ministry said.

The total cost of the project is estimated to be $10 Billion to complete with this initial amount funding the first phase of development. Calabar’s industrial strength lies in its Free Trade Zone and its focus on export-oriented industries like pharmaceuticals, food processing, and light manufacturing. It also has a deep seaport which is an advantage for export activities.

Mali now an Authoritarian State:

In a new blow to Mali’s fallen democracy, General Assimi Goita, the The head of Mali’s junta administration, has granted himself an additional five-year presidential mandate, that will be renewable “as many times as necessary” and without election, in a bill signed into law on Thursday.  The bill implemented the recommendations of the “national dialogue consultations” organised by the military regime in April and boycotted by political parties. The legislation has now been approved by the military-appointed legislative body last week.

The law, which Goita approved on Tuesday, allows him to lead the West African nation until at least 2030, despite the military government’s initial pledge to return to civilian rule in March 2024.  In a backwards shift away from democratic principals, Goita had also dissolved all political parties in May this year, which was followed by a surge in kidnappings of pro-democracy activists in the capital, Bamako, and just days after a demonstration by several hundred activists.
