AWS Announces $230 Million Commitment to Support Global Generative AI Startups
Amazon Web Services (AWS) has unveiled a major $230 million initiative aimed at bolstering startups worldwide in developing generative AI applications. This comprehensive support package will provide early-stage companies with AWS credits, mentorship, and educational resources to enhance their AI and machine learning capabilities.
A substantial part of this investment will be directed towards the second cohort of the AWS Generative AI Accelerator. This program is set to offer top-tier expertise and up to $1 million in AWS credits to each of the 80 selected early-stage startups leveraging generative AI to address complex problems. Applications for this program are open until July 19.
Matt Wood, Vice President of Artificial Intelligence Products at AWS, underscored the company’s longstanding commitment to supporting startups, noting that 96% of all AI/ML unicorns currently operate on AWS, a testament to the platform’s pivotal role in driving innovation.
The AWS credits included in this initiative will allow startups to access a wide array of AWS technologies, such as compute, storage, and database services. They can also leverage AWS Trainium and Inferentia2, AI chips designed for high performance with energy efficiency. Additionally, startups will have access to Amazon SageMaker for model building and training, as well as Amazon Bedrock for developing generative AI applications.
The AWS Generative AI Accelerator targets startups across diverse sectors, including financial services, healthcare, media and entertainment, business, and climate change. The 10-week program offers sessions on enhancing machine learning performance, optimizing tech stacks, and developing go-to-market strategies. Each startup will be matched with business and technical mentors tailored to their industry needs.
NVIDIA, the presenting partner for the accelerator, will offer additional support, providing access to industry experts, technology, and specialized technical sessions. Participants will also be invited to join the NVIDIA Inception program, which supports cutting-edge startups.
The selection of startups for the second cohort will be announced on September 10, with the program commencing on October 1 at Amazon’s Seattle campus. All 80 startups will have the chance to present their solutions to potential investors, customers, partners, and AWS leaders in Las Vegas.
Jachin Bhasme, co-founder and COO of Leonardo.AI, a participant in the first cohort, shared his positive experience with the accelerator, noting that AWS’s infrastructure helped reduce inferencing costs by 60% and accelerate language model inference speeds by up to 35%. He also praised the valuable business and technical mentorship provided during the program.
Nima Alidoust, CEO and co-founder of Vevo Therapeutics, another participant, lauded AWS’s combination of technology, partner network, and access to potential customers in the life sciences sector. He highlighted how the accelerator program offered crucial opportunities to leverage AWS’s infrastructure and expertise in scaling model training and development.
This initiative underscores AWS’s dedication to fostering innovation in the generative AI space and supporting startups as they build, launch, and scale their businesses. As AI technology continues to evolve rapidly, programs like the AWS Generative AI Accelerator are essential in nurturing the next wave of ground-breaking technologies and applications.
