Comstor places a strong emphasis on nurturing relationships and assuming calculated financial risk to enable small businesses. “Distributors don’t operate like banks we take risks to ensure SMMEs can access large opportunities,” he explained. This includes flexible financing and hands-on support to help small, often one-person operations scale effectively.

He added that many SMMEs depend on Comstor as a value-added partner, benefiting from training and enablement to enhance their market competitiveness. “What you don’t know, you can’t sell,” he said, stressing the importance of knowledge in driving business growth.

Post-COVID Recovery and Market Re-Emergence

Bowes discussed the impact of COVID-19, which led to a significant loss of skilled personnel across the tech sector in southern Africa. “We lost talent to retrenchments and emigration,” he said. Now, as businesses recover and governments renew spending, talent is returning, and markets are regaining momentum. He emphasized that Comstor is helping partners revisit legacy systems and optimize their “tech refresh” strategies. “Some tech is over 10 years old and no longer viable”. 

Making Next-Gen Technology Accessible to SMMEs

Comstor’s role in helping Africa leapfrog outdated systems by introducing accessible next-generation Cisco technologies. He identified enterprise networking and cybersecurity as the leading verticals. “Security is at the forefront globally. From banks to parliaments, cyber threats are real. We need the right people, the right language, and the right tools to close those opportunities.”

For Bowes, supporting SMMEs is personal. “I come from a family that started out as a small business outside of IT and no one took a chance on us,” he shared. This background fuels his commitment to enabling SMMEs through partnerships, job creation, graduate programs, and breaking down barriers within the corporate landscape.

Looking ahead, Bowes emphasized growing the SMME partner base and helping existing SMMEs evolve into competitive players. “We want them to grow but also to be financially capable of continuous operation in their businesses,” he explained. He stressed the need for SMMEs to meet certification and compliance standards, enabling them to compete with larger players while maintaining support from Comstor. When asked about common characteristics among the award winners, Bowes pointed to ambition, trust, and a deep commitment to partnership. “These SMMEs have allowed us to walk the journey with them. Their growth reflects our mutual relationship and support. In the future, Comstor aims to support the growth of more SMEs to drive job creation as part of its empowerment initiative as well.
