The hydrogel launcher powered by light, takes inspiration from squirt cucumber plants. The launcher is said to be able to take off from any surface by releasing energy in just 0.3 milliseconds.

In robotics, some tasks require movement, like leaping, expelling substances, or even hurling objects from one spot to another. They are produced by designing robots that store energy beforehand and release it. The launcher can cover 643 times its body height and it can also be used as a projectile.

It also has the potential to be used as a smart-seeding agriculture robot or medicinal robot for deep tissue sampling. The small disk-shaped launcher is only 7mm in diameter and 3mm in thickness and can reach a vertical distance of over 1.93 meters (6.33 feet).

The team tested the flexible launching system on various surfaces like leaves, bark, and viscous liquids to potentially create autonomous medical robots for deep tissue procedures that require high force. This power amplification serves as a foundation for movement to enhance the functionalities of compact soft robotic systems.

It was demonstrated that the launcher in a smart seed robot was shown by connecting a seed and radio-frequency identification (RFID) to the hydrogel matrix. Sensors in a smart seed bed read the RFID when it is planted to identify the seed type and broadcast care instructions.

The launch system is still being tested by the team and can be used for creating medical robots that need a high-force output to enter deep tissue.

Spiro’s $100 Million Bet Is on Keeping African Riders Moving

Spiro has raised $100 million in what is being described as Africa’s largest ever investment in electric mobility. The interesting part is not only the size of the investment. It is where Spiro is putting its money. The company is building around electric motorcycles, but more importantly, it is building the infrastructure needed to keep those
